  • Meals are included during our workshops. Food is vegetarian, with vegan and gluten-free options available.

    We provide a simple breakfast spread of fresh fruit, oatmeal packets, homemade muffins and/or granola bars, coffee, and tea.

    Lunch and dinner are hearty vegetarian meals, catered by local small businesses. Vegan and gluten-free options are available upon request.

  • Camping sites are available for no additional cost.

    We have a small number of tiny, rustic sleeping cottages available to rent. Each cottage provides the basics- a mattress with fresh bedding, a lamp, and a fan. Inquire about cottage availability when registering.

    Our campus is 10 minutes from Saxapahaw, a small town with AirBNB rental options as well.

    All workshop participants have access to our community bathhouse, which includes hot showers and compost toilets. There is also a small pond for swimming and a fire pit available for use in the evenings. Feel free to bring an instrument!

  • This workshop is held on-site at the Mud Dauber campus, on our small homestead.

    We are 10 min away from Saxapahaw, NC, 30 minutes from Carrboro/Chapel Hill, NC, and one hour from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

 

2-Day Hands-On Living Roof

DESCRIPTION:

Installing a green roof on your building can help it blend into the natural world around it, allow for an organic roof shape, and help to keep it cool during summer months.

In this workshop, we will be installing all the layers of a basic living roof, from rafters all the way to the final soil on top! You’ll get experience with basic power tools and hand tools during this course.

  • HANDS-ON:

    * measuring/cutting/installing rafters

    * processing and installing locally-sawn boards into a roof deck

    * constructing the “false fascia” and “finished fascia” layers

    * installing the EPDM rubber liner, with protective layer beneath, and drainage outlets

    * installing drainage and soil/living layers

    DISCUSSION:

    * alternative roof framing options (roundwood, conventional framing, etc…)

    * alternative insulation options

    * TOUR of existing living roofs on our campus

    * slideshow presentation
