Intro to Cob

Learn the basics of mixing and applying cob here at our campus in Snow Camp, NC!  We will take clay soil, sand, and straw and turn it into a durable, non-toxic wall for a small cottage.  Expect to get muddy and have fun!

2 Day Cob & Straw Intro Course

This will be a full weekend of natural building: mostly hands-on work, coupled with a photo presentation and discussion. We are beginning a very ambitious garden wall project at our campus, and each weekend workshop group will complete another section of wall! You will learn about:

  • mixing and applying cob
  • trimming and shaping cob
  • how to determine the right mix ratios
  • what are the thermal properties of cob?
  • what are the pros and cons of cob?
  • methods of installing strawbales
  • the “balecob” hybrid technique
  • adhesion coat on strawbales
  • plastering on strawbales will both lime and clay-based plaster
  • what are the thermal properties of strawbale?
  • what are the pros and cons of strawbale?

Healthful, home-cooked meals are provided each day! Our meals begin with Saturday’s breakfast, and end with lunch on Sunday. You are encouraged to stay on campus Saturday night (and potentially Friday night, too), either tenting or renting a cottage.

Earliest Bird: $170 (90 days advance payment)

Natural Plasters and Paints

Join us for four days of hands on experience learning the basics of natural plasters and paints.  There is nothing that compares to the beauty of a naturally finished wall!  We will be taking clay, sand, and straw and turning it into durable, non-toxic, beautiful natural plasters that can be used just as easily in a conventional home (on drywall, etc) or a natural home like straw bale or cob.  

We will cover harvesting and processing materials from your own site, as well as using purchased pottery clays. In this intensive workshop we will also cover lime plaster, as well as natural paints and other finishes such as a clay alis that can be used in creative applications to create the aesthetic you desire in your own project!

Sign up by April 15th for the early bird rate of $350, regular rate is $400

7-Day Cob and Straw Immersion

Join us for a week learning to build with cob and straw bales! You will leave this course ready to take on your own project. During this workshop we will cover these aspects of natural construction with both hands-on learning and discussion, from foundation through roof. Our spring 2018 immersion class will focus on creating a small earthen cottage on our campus here in Snow Camp, NC.  

Expect to learn:
*how to choose a building site
*executing a rubble trench foundation
*building a foundation stem-wall to support a natural wall
*mixing cob by foot
*mixing cob by machine
*applying, sculpting, and trimming cob
*installing and modifying strawbales
*how to incorporate proper details for long-lasting strawbale walls
*thermal properties of cob and strawbale
*pros and cons of both cob and strawbale
*hybrid and other natural walls (“balecob”, slip-straw, wattle and daub, etc…)
*intro to mixing and applying natural lime and clay plasters
*installing windows and doors
*very basic wiring in natural walls
*basic round pole framing
*framing a simple roof
*in-depth discussion of living roof installation (potential for hands on


***Three healthful, home-cooked meals are provided each day! You are encouraged to stay on campus all week, either tenting or renting a tiny sleeping cottage. Sharing time in this community of people is a wonderful part of the workshop experience.
